There has been a secular move towards more and better education in Germany as welì as in other inditstrialized countrìes silice thè 1970s. In particular, thè fraction ofhigh school graduates contimiing on to university has steadily risen. This paper explores thè economie determinants affecting hìgh school graduates ' career choices in Germany. A qualitative response mode! is deduced from thè theoiy of human capitai and estimated with data from thè German Socio-economie Panel from 1985 throitgh 1994, nsìng thè midtinomial logit approach. The estimation results show that high school graduates' career decisions are at least partially determined by economie considerations. Other major determinants are thè parental skill-level, and age at thè time ofAbitur.
