The “Subsidia hagiographicaµ collection began to appear in 1886 with the publication of tools (catalogues of manuscripts and repertories of hagiographic texts) mainly intended for the Bollandists working on the Acta Sanctorum. It gradually became independent of the great historical enterprise, the continuation of which appeared increasingly problematic. After the First World War, it incorporated the methodological works of Hippolyte Delehaye, which had initially been published outside the collection. This was followed by editions of texts with a translation and commentary, monographs, and even some complete hagiographical dossiers, so that today the collection no longer appears as an auxiliary to the Acta Sanctorum but as its continuation, together with the journal «Analecta Bollandiana».
