198In the 20th Century from psychoanalysis to the mainstream of cognitive science, the leitmotiv didn’t change: the phylogeny of sapiens would be restricted to a rigorous aut aut, language or olfaction. This essay intends to question this commonplace of philosophical and scientific research through a critical review of the work of Asifa Majid. His innovative studies suggest that the refractoriness of words to smells concerns some languages and not the faculty of language. In the last paragraph the essay proposes some lines of research to deepen an open problem
