The essay intends to demonstrate that Croce's discussion of Marx- ism is not limited to the youthful phase of his philosophical activity but continues throughout his life. And if in the first phase Croce's attention is essentially direct- ed to the demonstration of the non-scientific character of the Marxian theory of value, subsequently he will discuss Sorel's revolutionary syndicalism and will imagine as possible the formation of a socialist movement made functional to the growth of the National state. Finally, in the last period of his life, Croce deals very critically with the idea of 'communism as a political reality'. This constant interest in Marxism arises from the fact that, while denying Marxism any scientific validity, Croce is aware of the fact that it theoretically represents a social force that needs to be integrated into the history of liberal civilization.
