The very definition of «sustainable mobility» as a «transport system for people and goods, which, while satisfying travel or handling needs, does not generate negative externalities and helps to guarantee a good quality of life», makes it clear that the topic is far-reaching. Mobility involves all areas of the population’s well-being. Furthermore, the mobility sector is a perfect example of that interrelationship between the different dimensions of sustainability: environmental, economic and social. If the new mobility paradigm presupposes progress towards the reduction of polluting emissions and pollution, its importance also arises in terms of economic return. If it is true that mobility is one of the greatest achievements of modernity, it is also true that in terms of sustainability there are many challenges to face. In Italy, the low level of sustainability is due to two factors: the individual habits of citizens who prefer the adoption of individual motorized mobility, due to its flexibility of use, and the presence of an obsolete car fleet. Achieving a higher level of sustainability cannot ignore a change in individual habits towards more sustainable modes of transport, and a renewal of the fleet in circulation, not excluding the possibility that public incentives support this transition towards «vehicles greens».
