In 1972 the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment (Unche), and the publication of the report The Limits to Growth, were a key moment in the construction and the collective perception of the environment as a planetary issue. For a long time the historiography has interpreted this shift as a result of the commitment of concerned scientists, combined with the movement "from below" of the early environmental movement. More recent research has proposed a more complex picture, in which the construction of the movement is seen as a consequence of the strategies of numerous different actors above all from outside the environmentalist camp and which date back to the years immediately following World War II. From this perspective the events of 1972 are contextualised within new historical frameworks, and so assume new meanings
