464Researchers have argued that anti-Roma attitudesare a unique form of prejudice, proposinga new Attitudes Toward Roma Scale (ATRS).However, studies on its characteristics are lacking. The current study addresses this gap by investigatingATRS characteristics in Southern Italy.Participants included 200 university students andyoung adults and adults (age range 18-60 years). The results supported a three-factor structure forATRS, grasping three different aspects of anti-Roma attitudes: blatant stereotyping, undeservedbenefits, and cultural difference. Each factor subscaleshowed good internal consistency reliability.Furthermore, gender was not associated withATRS factors, while age was positively relatedto undeserved benefits and cultural difference.Diverse patterns of association between ATRSfactors and theoretically relevant correlates werefound. Taken together, these findings suggest thatthe ATRS can be a valuable tool to assess andbetter understand attitudes toward a highly stigmatizedminority group like the Roma.
