The island of Lampedusa, in Sicily, has been in the news for years becauseof the landings of migrants (especially Africans). Our study is based on interviewswith cultural mediators who work with NGOs and other hostinghumanitarian organizations based on this extreme land of Europe. We intendto verify, through our interviews, what are the major cultural problems (Katan2014 [1999]) in translation, the level of manipulation and the risks that translatorsmust assume to accomplish their task.
