Between 1928 and 1939 a series of murders and violent acts associated with the «Black Hand Gang» struck fear into the Italian population of North Queensland. Since the first murder in the region associated with Italian organized crime took place in 1928 newspaper reports and academic studies have posited numerous interpretations of the events. These have tended to swing between the extremes of either overblown sensationalism concerning the crimes or dismissing the reporting of «Black Hand» crime as simply the work of an anti-Italian Australian press. However, I would argue that a re-examination of the Black Hand experience in North Queensland is needed, one that utilizes more recent studies on organized crime in the United States and Italy as well as new archival evidence drawn from Australian and Italian sources. Through this approach a more serious academic consideration of the Australian «Black Hand» is possible, thus facilitating a greater understanding of the origins of transnational Italian crime in Australia
