A fourth wave of Italians to Australia is growing each year by 2000 people. The protagonists of this wave, defined by the authors the globalisti ("globe-trotters"), rely on the Internet for its understandings of what international migration might offer them, and for communicating with friends and family. Their social media presence forms one of the primary sources for this research, along with informal interviews with 25 people, collected by snowball sampling, and other printed sources. The globalisti bring with them not so much an "identity", as earlier scholars of migration emphasised, but a set of skills, competencies and values formed in their hometowns. These personal attributes survive the migration process and equip these Italians, products of Berlusconi’s Italy, with strategies to navigate an increasingly complex world. They are learning how much of Australia’s post-war history has been shaped by the third wave of Italian immigrants, and might influence Australia's immediate future
