"Essayification" (C. Wampole) is the new word for an international trend in writing, namely a nonfictional prose with a meditative subject at its centre and a non-dogmatic point of view which reveals hidden aspects of the contemporary world. The aim of this paper is to investigate these recent works from the Italian literary sphere which appear united in attempting to give shape to reality beyond media representation. Rather than being engaged essays (in the tradition of Pasolini), these authors describe Italian towns, unusual landscapes and social life, always starting with an individual viewpoint, free from ideology and without a specific ambition, in order to depict contemporary Italy. Far removed from literary tradition and language, these nonfictional works employ common vocabulary and simple syntax to give an impression of sincere testimony.
