The purpose of this paper is to analyse the type of military roles that Catalan Communist women held during the years of Franco’s dictatorship. The secrecy and harshness of the repression exercised by General Francisco Franco’s regime led the Catalan Communist Party (PSUC) to employ, for a sustained period of time, a type of heavily masculinised activism, in which physical endurance, “manly” courage and the possibility of full-time devotion to political work, limited the female communist activist to the supporting role of “assistant to the militant-man”. It was during the last years of Franco’s dictatorship that, while fighting against the Regime, many female militants questioned both these forms of militant inequality and the gender relations within the party.
