It may at first seem of little interest to consider the style of a physician, but this is not the case. Medical rhetoric, as Pinel calls it, is essential to the creation and evolution of the clinic. It is not arbitrary to speak about poetry concerning the “invention” of noises according to such notable figures as Hippocrates himself, Aretaeus, Baillou, and Laennec. Regarding style, Baillou was one of the greatest writers of the western medical tradition from Hippocrates to Laennec.
