In this paper the author tries to find in the psychological and legal literature of the earliest four decades of the 20th century the sources that specifically dealt with the reliability of minors as witnesses. As far as possible, the differences between authors have been emphasized not only as regards different theoretical points of view, but also their different socio-cultural backgrounds. It lies outside the purpose of this paper to reconstruct the complex debate in the early 20th century between psychologists, jurists, psychiatrists, pedagogues and criminologists over the validity of the testimony of child witnesses in criminal trials.
