During the thirty years from 1880 to 1910 medicine experienced a rapid development through the rational use of drugs. This resulted in the superseding of traditional Materia Medica, and in the first “therapeutic methodology”, thus leading to a change in the medical profession. This article is based on a wide variety of primary sources, including pamphlets, therapeutic guides in French, English, Italian and German (Gilbert-Yvon, Herzen, Lyon-Loiseau, Manquant, Phillips, Brunton, Martinet, Fiessinger, the Italian editions of the “Medicamenta”, etc.). Furthermore, the author has analyzed the distribution and efficacy of a series of medicines, from hypnotics to cardiotonics and analgesics, the most popular and unique types of medical treatments, and gastric antacids and lecithin, ferrous compounds, potassium iodide, and organotherapy. The efficacy of a number of therapies, unparalleled in the previous century, has influenced the idea of the “invention of health”, which dominated “la belle époque”. The rapid growth of therapies, including electrotherapy, kinaesthetic-therapy, hydrotherapy, chromo-therapy, can now be better understood when considered in the light of the dosages and preparations of the rational therapeutics introduced between the late 19th and the early 20th centuries.
