This essay is made up of two main parts. The first is an analysis from an epistemological point-of-view of the function of case-studies in clinical literature. This represents analysis of the individual within the context of disciplines based on establishing general rules. Especial emphasis is placed on the role of the ‘clinical case format’ in highlighting pathological phenomena that at the present do not seem to have been adequately understood or treated. At the same time, within the context of research, the way in which a clinical case is interpreted also provides the context for a proposal for a new forms of explanation. The fact that each ‘individual’ case can also have ‘general’ reference and a ‘general’ conceptual significance does not mean it should be lost beneath a new general theory, leaving no room for an individual-based approach. The second part of the essay is then devoted to the analysis of the reasons why clinical disciplines seem to be linked closely to an individual approach and to a type of research based on individual case-studies.
