This article presents the results of the collective research project “The disordered mind”, which was developed in the Netherlands between 1999 and 2005 and which led to the publication of individual essays after its conclusion. The origins and the main themes of the project are described, as are its comparative and theoretical approaches; its attempt at a synthesis of the history of Dutch psychiatry in the “long twentieth century” is also analysed. Furthermore, the Dutch research is compared with Italian studies that were carried out in the same period.
