Agro-environmental measures represent a very important aspect of EU’s rural development policies aimed to widespread environmentally sustainable farming practises. In the study, the author analyses the measures adopted by the EU within the rural development programming period 2007-2013 and suggests the use of statistical indicators in order to define the areas where to address the different rural development measures. Such indicators are constructed by using methodologies based on cluster analysis which is considered as the most suitable methodology to identify observed phenomena and thus select the most suitable agro-environmental measures. The study has been conducted on the Italian Region of Campania and has lead to the selection of ten clusters, on a township level, which correspond to the rural areas to which, according to rural development plans, actions are addressed.
