In 1744 abbot Giovanni Marangoni(Vicenza 1672-1753) publishedDelle Cose gentilesche e profanetrasportate ad uso e adornamentodelle chiese with the printers Niccolòe Marco Paglierini. The work addressesthe theme of re-use of in ancientRoman churches, investigatedboth in doctrinaire and antiquarianaspects. This work was the first, andfor a long time the only one entirelydedicated to such phenomena. Thisarticle focuses on the cultural contextof the author and on the aspectsof antiquarian interest in Cose gentilesche. The topic of re-use is addressedas catalog of various types ofspoliae. One of the most notablecontributions by Marangoni is relatedto the motivations behind thispractice. His analysis focuses on thepropagandistic and celebratory useof the phenomenon of re-use, withthe materials of the great classicalheritage exhibited in terms of Christianstrophies over the defeated paganreligions. In this work Marangonialso provides much evidence onthe contemporary practice of the destructionof antiquities; this evidenceis a indicator of a melting pot of ideasand initiatives for their safeguard. He reports many contemporarychronicles that are a real indictmentagainst gross negligence and malfeasanceof the so-called «custodians»of the churches. They became inmany cases responsible for the destructionof parts of the centuriesoldart-historical fabric, in part this isthe result of the restoration campaignof the oldest churches promotedby papal patronage during thefirst half of the Eighteenth Century.Nor were Marangoni himself and hisfriend and colleague MarcantonioBoldetti, owner of the office of Custodianof the Sacred Relics andCemeteries, exempt from similar accusationsconcerning the managementof the Christian catacombs.
