This article reviews the academic works on executive politics in the European Union, from the first contributions in the early 60s to the latest studies. It highlights both how developments in the broader literature have guided works on the European Union and how these have contributed to the study of comparative executive politics. Lastly, the essay analyses the normative implications of this literature, in light of the debate on the democratic deficit, and suggests a research agenda.
