The importance of the academies in European history since the 16th century is currently being defined by a historiography that is analyzing the multiple facets of the phenomenon. The example of Siena helps to introduce the overall context, since its academies soon became known and admired partly for their own regulations, partly for the innovative literary works that they disseminated already in the first century of their activity. The paper emphasizes the importance of the Intronati, without neglecting the Rozzi, and also gives space to the last academy, the Chigiana musical academy
