This essay explains how the environmental assessment (V.I.A.) is an useful instrument of environmental political decisions only if it utilizes an integrated approach. Without such approach, the V.I.A. risks to sacrify important values (different from the environmental ones) in a development process, or, on the contrary, a right consideration of environmental costs. The Author concludes by recommending the incorporation of the V.I.A. in a more general evaluating and decision-making process, so that environmental political decisions can be assessed in a broader development planning
