Much of current comment on unemployment compensation schemes in Eastern Europe appears to be based on consideration of only a limited range cf the parameters in these schemes and with little attention paid to other sources of income support for the unemployed. Such an approach is inadequate and may give a misleading picture of both living standards and incentives to work. The paper considers in detail the functioning in principle of the income support system for the unemployed in Hungary. Some aspects of the functioning in practice of the central element - unemployment compensation - is then analysed using data from administrative sources. Payments do not appear to be particularly generous. The potential use of these data in econometric duration analysis is outlined.
