606The figure of Count Richard de Coudenhove-Kalergi represents an example of work
and intellectual clarity whose life and work is a continuous effort to achieve unity in
Europe.
For this reason you can be considered as one of the pioneers of the reality that today is the
European Union and should be placed on the list of so-called "Fathers of Europe".
His most important work is "Paneuropa" in which he offers the main lines to reach a
federation of European states in the search for balance and peace in this continent.
It is not surprising that his proposals were made in the period from the first Great War to
the Second World War and that when his views are ignored, Europe faces a fratricidal war
that predicts itself not to achieve a true union Between the European States.
That is why his work "Paneuropa" published in 1923 is still valid in our days where the
neglect of the essential values on which the European Union is based seem to fade away
from the populist and totalitarian tendencies that threaten the European balance in the
twenty first century. We must not lose sight of the fact that a Europe in peace must be
based on the values of democracy, the rule of law, freedom and the defense of human
rights.
