France is still one of the countries to adopt a centralized language policy at the constitutional level; this right to defend the language of the Republic considers the other language communities as a cultural anomaly. The French language, in fact, has always been a symbol of national unity, and only recently - as a result of constitutional amendments - regional languages begin to be part of the heritage of the nation. In the era of multiculturalism, the challenge for the French state is represented by the need to balance the principle of the national identity defence and the protection of linguistic and cultural biodiversity.
