Title: Two Decades On: Assessing the Impact of the Copenhagen Criteria on Environmental Performance in the 2004 EU Accession Countries.
Abstract: The study investigates the relationship between institutional quality and environmental performance focusing on the 2004 EU accession countries. Using a quantile panel model, the paper examines how various institutional factors, such as state capacity, property rights, and democratization, affect greenhouse gas emissions across different levels of emission intensity. The findings indicate that stronger institutions are generally associated with lower emissions, with a more pronounced effect observed in higher-emitting countries. Additionally, it is found that higher percentage of untransposed Single Market directives is associated with higher greenhouse gas emissions.
