This article reconstructs the reasons for the persistent success of Putnam's "Making Democracy Work" since its publication in 1993, highlighting "inter¬nal" and "external" reasons. It focuses also on the criticism addressed to the Putnam's cultural theory of democracy. It concludes by considering some search results that continue and deepen the analysis of the role of the "civic community" and its territorial distribution.
