The essay introduces the «Autonomie locali e servizi sociali» special issue on qualitative social research in contemporary Italy’s prison system. After highlighting the opportunity to collect the selected contributions in this historical period, the article summarizes the current conditions of detention in Italy and the state of social research on prison. In its final part, it introduces the individual contributions and the most relevant topics faced by the researchers.
