According to Hegel the notion of freedom reaches existence only through its particularization in a person. This process involves both free will and embodiment, in a relationship that makes the dimension of vulnerability emerge in the very moment of the institution of abstract Right. The article traces the notion of the person in Hegel's Philosophy of right, in order to challenge the well-known genealogy of the issue of recognition in Hegel's early works, emancipating Hegel from the narrowness of the 19th Century philosophy of the State.
